O
n the two occasions that I've been to the Twisted Fork, I have looked over to Tsunami and said to myself, "Man that place looks like its worth a try...". I've actually also heard a lot of good things about this place.
Standing out with bright blue lights just off Stirling Highway on Glyde Street, is Tsunami; as opposed to the blended in state of the Twisted Fork across the street. The restaurant seems to have 3 different sections or modes. The first with booths and a table or two in a brightly lit section, clearly visible from the street through the glass windows. As you proceed down the hall, past the kitchen there is the more intimate dining section with much gentler lighting, and larger tables. Then as you proceed further out the door there is a roofed Japanese garden entangled with leaves and Christmas style lights all over - obviously the most romantic setting of the aforementioned. If I was to pick on this one thing on the garden, it would be because we were the only ones seated there last night, service was fairly isolated.
As soon as we arrived we ordered our entrees and mains. For entrees we had:
- The Tokyujou Sashimi (Traditional, thick cut sashimi)
- Gyu Tataki
- Enoki Gyu (Thin wagyu clices wrapped around enoki)
For our mains we ordered:
- Teppanyaki steak wagyu and
- the Wagyu sirloin
The sashimi was very fresh, so no complains there. I believe we had salmon, tuna and kingfish. The gyu tataki was served with a light dressing with fresh and dried seaweed. The enoki gyu was delightful, sweetly savoury, and perfectly cooked.
The mains were ishiyaki style, meaning they were served on these volcanis slabs of rock heated to 400C degrees I think. The meat was served sizzling on the rocks with a dipping sauce, a very petite salad and rice. It was delicious, but the sizzling and spitting of the meat while it cooked may not find everyones favour.
All in all I thought the food was good. I would definitely return to sample the other items on the menu. If there was anything to pick on tonight it would be service, as I mentioned we were the only ones seated in the garden area, and seemed to be ignored by the waitstaff. The kitchen seemed undermanned, but I was told this was due to the chef wanting to keep all the cooking to him and his sous chef - who am I to criticize?
