I
t wasn’t my idea, but we did have a great night. I was keen to sample the menu, as there were numerous items that sounded appealing to me, plus I have heard great things about the chef, Ian Lawless.
We were greeted by security outside and he asked to look in our drinks cooler. What did he expect, a couple of sticks of C4 and a detonator? All he found was 6 cold Coronas, but I guess you can’t be too careful. We asked for a table of four, and were advised that it would be a wait of about 1hr and 45 minutes. I had to stop what would be my natural reflex of, upon hearing this news, walking straight out the door. They had a small sitting area for people to wait for their tables, and it was already packed with eager customers. We piled in and proceeded to wait till our name was called.
About 2 hours, 4 Coronas and a bottle of champagne later, our name was called and we were seated. The girls were not even around; they had run out to get another bottle of champagne and a six-pack. By this stage I was starving, so we promptly ordered some entrées to keep us from expiring. The girls arrived just in time to share the entrées (damn it), and we all had enough alcohol.
Entrée
Grilled Oysters
I ate most of the "Six grilled oysters wrapped in pancetta on a mini frittata, with a mizuna salad, and a caramelised onion jam". I am not a fan of natural oysters, but love a good Kilpatrick, and this dish was superbly crafted. The ingredients worked well and they were extremely enjoyable.
Schiaciata bread
The bread came with “Njoi Extra Virgin Olive Oil, white bean and rosemary”. I did get a small piece of this and it was very tasty. I also thought it was excellent value at $3.50.
We were pretty boring in our choice of main course, two Ridge beef fillets and two Surf & turfs. There was a little bit of a wait between entrée and main course, but that might be because the starters arrived in record time.
Main Course
Ridge beef fillet
The “Tender Ridge beef fillet with hand cut chips, asparagus and truffle aioli” was a fantastic cut of meat. It was thick and tender, and definitely better that the beef with the Surf & Turf. The chips were great to, and the accompaniments went together perfectly.
Surf & Turf
“Ash's Surf and Turf. Grilled beef on lemon mash with garlic roasted crayfish and tomato hollandaise”. The presentation was fantastic, unfortunately I was too busy scoffing my food as I was starving by this stage, so I didn’t take any photos of it. The beef was tender, and the crayfish with the garlic was rich and sweet, a perfect contrast.
Desert
Chocolate Fondue
The “Margaret River chocolate fondue for 2” is probably the best known dish on the menu, and I knew we were not leaving without ordering it. I didn’t have much myself, but there were numerous things to dip in the melted chocolate, and then make a mess of the table and yourself on the way to your mouth. Judging by the state of the girls’ faces, and a failed attempt to lick the chocolate out of the fondue bowl, it must have been good.
Bread & Butter Pudding
The “Caramelised apple bread and butter pudding with toffee and cinnamon ice cream” was all mine to eat. It was absolutely stunning, without doubt the best Bread & Butter pudding I have ever had. I recommend this if you can tear yourself away from the fondue.
3 Ice Creams
Apparently “Ash and Amanda's 3 ice creams” were a little disappointing, I didn’t sample any of them, but I got reports that “one was really good, one was alright, and one was average”. You never know, maybe you’ll like them all.
Overall the service was friendly and quite professional. I though the lighting was a bit harsh, but I guess that’s for when they have people recording for television. The atmosphere is nice and surprisingly the décor works quite well. I was cringing at the colours when I was watching on TV. Apart from the 2 hour wait, the night was very pleasant, and all the food was thoroughly enjoyed. I will probably return, but once things have settled down a bit.
The prices are not exorbitant, but be prepared to pay a bit if you want to enjoy three decent courses.
They are not licenced, so if you wish to wet your whistle with something other than Soda or water you will have to byo. Corkage is $3.50, which they forgot to charge us, but i guess we're even, as we forgot to get out last 4 beers.

I reckon Perth has been the target from day one. Everybody had Ash and Amanda up against the wall and was always ready to put them down. To me the reviewer is just bias, well what does one expect when the reviewer is from the eastern states.

Most down to earth food, most down to earth people - whatever happens, Ash and Amanda will soar, God bless 'em. And if you don't believe us, witness the rave review from the Sydney-centric sourpusses this week - go Perth (again!) we cry. Just wish we could get there from rural WA to actually eat the bloody food!

Perth does not deserve to win the competition at all. It is nothing more than a catastrophic mix of outdated retro colour, pub food and pretend competition battlers. Why do you think that they have been nominated for closure.....twice!

I am a Perth local and support my state in every opportunity it deserves. We live in a fantastic place - no disputing this. We also have a number of great restaurants with many different choices available. Granted we do not have the population of Sydney and Melbourne but we offer a pretty good cross section of dining experiences.

The truth is Perth are getting Australias vote because they ARE seen as the 'battlers', the 'underdogs'. Most of MRR is Ash saying 'dude' and whinging alot. What work has been done? He choose the fab decore of the restaurant? Nice choice. Brisbane worked hard, they ran the place, they worked in the place.

Dunno about sticking it up the vics. Here born in Sydney and lived in melbourne since 1963. Am Australian. Congratulations to both of you. had a gut feeling half way through that you would win. Down to earth and surprise, good business sense. Not bad for a wharfie hey Amanda. Tell that fantastic Scot Chef of yours, we think he is the best. Would like to see the sword on the wall when we visit. You are now Australia's favourite restaurant well done. Sorry Sam but Australia voted. Hope the wedding goes well, no doubt will see you on TV. Just read Steph Bathfield.....perhaps she forgot just how kind Natalie and Simon have been to the other contestants.I didn't see A+A visiting Emily (SA) in hospital - N+S were the first there. I didn't see A+A visit any other restaurant just to try the food before they shut down - N+S were the first (and only) to visit anyone else off their own bat. I also noticed Simon was the first one to call Ash and empathise (not gloat) when it was first announced they were up for eviction.

Well done to Ash and Amanda on winning MRR. However, I have to wonder if the result would have been different if say Peter and Tay with Seven Stones were located in Perth and Amanda and Ash with Room 19 were in Melbourne? Would be congratulating a different winner? If so, what does that say? Just a thought...(I live in Perth by the way)

I'm very happy for Ash,& Amanda, they worked hard,& now they own there own restaurant. But people need to stop taking Perth's win,& Melbourne's loss so seriously, because after all,it was only reality television, nothing more, nothing less.Sure,Ash,& Amanda, deserved to win, they worked hard, but so did all the couples, they all deserved to win.But at the end of the day,the winner was determined not by the quality of their food, service,or ambience, but on their popularity.

What can I say, apart from there seems to be a few bitter & twisted people out there(especially those who didn't want WA to win) but at the end of the day, or in this case the competition, it wasn't about food, decor or even ambiance(have I spelt that right)it was about marketability and popularity and Ash ran it like a marketing campaign to begin with, he saw it for what it really was and that is one of the reasons why he and Amamnda won.

Congratulations Ash and Amanda. We were gunning for you all along. We live in QLD so we have not visited your resturant but we also had no desire to support the QLD entry. The last week was very hard to decide because Perth and Melb were both our favourites. I am glad with the outcome. We would like to also congratulate you on your up and coming wedding. I have not heard if the date has changed from 19th but we hope you all the best. We always said that we hoped you would get it as you had to go through the nomingations everytime. In the end we believed it may have been what was good for you as you were great at campaigneing. Your profile was also higher on TV because you had been nominated each time.

the comments that mny of you guys make are appauling.Ash and Amanda deserved to win because the whole of public voted for them. it's not a popularity contest, it's who deserves to win. who cares if they are the aussie battlers, they deserve the credit because they put there hert and soul into the restaurant and look who came out best. Ash and Amanda, i have not dined in your restaurant yet but am looking forward to dining there on my b'day next month. All of australia loves you and we still support you even if the cameras are gone. Also with simon and natalie, they were backstabbing and never deserved to win. People only dined in there restaurant to cop a bit of the action with the agueing, atleast WA has true spirit and stick together as a team.

Well,my girfriend & I finally dined at Room 19 the other night. We thought the food was really good, not great, slightly above average. The service was ok,a little clunky, but the staff were all friendly & polite. We felt the prices were a little high, the food was good, but not good enough to justify the price we paid.Out of a rating of 10,we'd give Room 19 a a borderline 6.

What a joke - your food and decor are rubbish. This show turned out to be a giant con job - nothing to do with restaurant and business strategy. It was a glorified popularity contest, won by people who had a pooh product, but enjoyed the support of a small (but dedicated) city with a massive provincial "chip on the shoulder".

Until this day I still can't believe Seven Stones did not win. It is very disheartening to learn that Australian voters voted b/c they did not like Peter's arrogance or Nick's stupidity etc....Its' a huge disappointment for the Melbourne Restaurant. I believe the show was a huge failure as the judges are there to influence the Australian voters. Perth always came last in the EXPERT reviews and they won....That is just unbelievable. Unlike shows such as Australian Idol, where judges did influence votes and true talent came through, this show has been a disaster.
