irst of all, I have to mention that this review is way overdue - a good 4 months or so in fact - but my experience dining here was so enjoyable that I have great confidence that its standard has yet to change.. Schedule has been so busy, but hopefully I can find time within the next week or so to fit in my recent dining experiences, because I really want to..!
I booked for about 10 people if I recall correctly, to have a nice birthday dinner, and having heard so much about Friends I was really excited, and needless to say, built up really high hopes for the place.. We started off the night with some drinks at the bar while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive, and were taken care of very well.. We also browsed through the wine list, and I was must say it was one of the most extensive wine lists I've ever laid eyes upon.. When everyone arrived, we were seated right away.. For entrees, there were a couple of dishes we ordered.. We started with some oysters, and then there was a scallop, kingfish, salmon served with avocado tartar and sesame oil I think, and wagyu beef with shaved parmesan cheese served with a rich dark sauce.. I had no complains there, none of us did..
The mains were truly enjoyable.. I had the kangaroo, served on a mash with blackberries, chestnuts and shallots.. On the table there was wagyu beef with bok choy, tasmanian salmon, barramundi fillet with potato chips and zuchini, and a rib eye as well.. I apologise for the vague recollection of these dishes due to being a couple of months old (I promise the next time I dine here it will be more detailed! =)), but I remember eating the food and just thinking, "This place is definitely a ten..". I heard from a friend of the recent alterations to their menu and I can't wait to go back...
The desert however, was worth remembering.. As most of us were stuffed by then, we just decided on two to share.. One was a frangipane tart with macadamia and served with a poached pear and a beautiful mascarpone, while the other was a vanilla pannacota, served with a praline, sticky dates and mint ice cream.. I believe "orgasmic", as some of my friends would say, was the word..
The restaurant had a really romantic air to it, very quiet, sophisticated, and relaxing.. Nothing was overdone and yet there was a good mix of lights, candles.. There were cabinets filled with wine, which I thought seemed to add a very modern rustic-y touch to the place.. I would definitely recommend Friends as a dine out venue for two..
I know a perfect ten isn't exactly easy to achieve, but having all my mates there, the food being perfect, the service attentive, might have caused me to be a little generous.. As we walked out, Friends just climbed a few ladders higher in my book, to somewhere on the first page..
