T he Bailey's Motel on Bennett St in East Perth opposite Wellington Square has been undergoing a renovation.
I became aware that there was a little restaurant in there so decided to check it out for lunch with some work colleagues.
The lunch menu is pretty standard fare - steak sandwich, parmigiana, ceasar salad etc but for $12.95 you get a meal and a choice of light beer or soft drink. For those prices we thought it was definitely worth a look.
The exterior is nothing to get exctied about but the interior, though small, is pleasant enough. The service is very good, it being a fairly small place there is plenty of opportunity for attention from the staff. The food, however, is fairly ordinary. My parmigiana was a good size but somewhat bland. The steak sandwich I am told was very oily. But no-one disagreed that while the food was not great it was good value for the money.
We decided to take up the $4.50 cake and coffee option - the cake selection was not bad, the servings a little small and no-one bothered with the coffee.
While I won't be rushing back I can say it was pretty good value for money. For a budget lunch you couldn't go too far wrong here.

Ok - went back again recently.
The price has gone up, the food has certainly not improved (possibly has gotten worse), but they have added a verandah area and optimistically changed their name to Cafe Bella Vista...
One of our crew tried the house white... didn't finish the glass. A few of us had the steak sandwich... not great.
They are really going to need to improve their kitchen if they want repeat business.

Ok, went back again last Friday. Why???
Cafe Bella Vista - as it is now called - has been advertising heavily on 6PR. The restaurant is close to my work so we thought we'd give it another try.
The restaurant was almost empty for Friday lunch. We sat down and ordered - we all got pizzas. Then waited. The first pizza came out after about 25 to 30 mins, the rest maybe 10 mins later... all except one which did not arrive until we were ready to leave so had to be takeaway. I hate to think how they would have coped if the restaurant had been busy.
The pizzas were nice but nothing fantastic and certainly not worth the wait.
But the best bit came at the end... We were given menus that stated that small pizzas cost $7.90 for lunch. When we got to the till, they tried to charge us $9.90... Well, we stuck to our guns and they backed down but after waiting ages for our food, it coming out in stages, and one of our group having to take his away, we were in no mood for that crap.

Why? Because you can't believe a place can be bad every time you visit. Either that our you're a glutton for punishment.
