W here to start...

When we arrived at Allure we were seated extremely close to another couple and it wasn’t exactly as we had imagined our romantic evening. The gentleman (I use the term quite loosely) at the adjacent table was a bit intoxicated and talking quite loudly, and at one point he squashed a flying insect on the table making my wife jump. We politely asked to be seated elsewhere, not really caring where. There were many tables of two available and we thought it would be no problem, however, we were told that there was some organising necessary to juggle the tables around. We enquired why, as we were not going to be taking up any more space just a different space. A member of staff responded, “Well perhaps whoever we seat at this table won’t want to sit here either”...

We were seated at another table eventually and presented with our menus and some appetiser type dishes, cold tomato soup, olives and bread and butter. All these items were quite enjoyable. We ordered some drinks and after about 15 minutes ordered our entrees. Believe me I am not exaggerating at all here, our entrees arrived about 3 minutes after we placed our order. Our drinks were still absent at this stage. When the waiter arrived he thought he had the wrong table as we were so surprised, but it was the correct order. We ordered the smoked salmon pasta with salmon pearls and a champagne sauce, and a Caesar salad with confit chicken, prawns and a soft boiled egg. Both dishes were reasonable, the pasta was a tad too salty.

In complete inconsistency with the speed of arrival of our entrees it took an extraordinary amount of time to clear our plates and bring forth our spectacularly disappointing mains. We ordered the pork belly with prawns and a sweet and sour sauce, and an Avon valley beef fillet with a cray tail. Both dishes were very lacklustre and poorly executed. The prawns and crayfish were suspiciously powdery in parts and the crayfish was smothered in wild mushrooms, I thought that was not at all complementary or necessary. On the plus side my glass of wine I ordered was quite pleasant, a Clairault Cab Sav.

At this point we were fairly keen to vacate the premises and the chocolate fondant I had eyed up on the desert menu earlier would have to find another mouth to call home. We requested the bill and headed for the cashier. As is customary the lady taking our money asked if we enjoyed our meal, I couldn’t help but say “no, it was average”. She looked a bit shocked and asked what the problem was. I highlighted a few deficiencies in the food and she said, “oh well, that’s good to know, I’ll pass that on to the kitchen.”

We were expecting great things from Allure, we were sadly mistaken and disappointed.

We also were expecting a nice romantic dinner but it was not to be. Food ordinary, service mediocre and we were not informed that on Friday & Saturday it is opened as a bar and so there was a 21st Birthday on the night we went with loud doof doof music and lots of noise (no disrespect to the 21st as they had also booked the coctail bar in good faith and didn't expect to be asked to turn the music down) but we should have been told when booking that only during the week is it quiet.

I strangely had a completely different experience when I visited Alure. I also went with a partner in expectation of a romantic evening and that is exactly what we received. We were seated quickly in accordance to our booking. We were also seated next to other couples, despite the restaurant not being overly busy, but after working in hospitality you realise this is usually due to staffing and sectioning reasons to ensure you receive adequate service, not an evil ploy to ruin your evening.

Our waiter helped us to select our drinks- a lovely white wine (though over-priced) and two delicious cocktails, which arrived promptly. Entree's arrived quickly as well and there was about 15-20 minutes between courses, which I felt was an appropriate wait. My only disappointment was that when we ordered our mains and mentioned we might be ordering dessert later, the waiter didn’t inform us that the chocolate soufflé required over 30 minutes to cook. As we were going to a show after the meal we had to skip it.

Over all the service was prompt, food was enjoyable, presentation was tidy and interesting and the drinks were a highlight. I will definitely return.
